JOB PURPOSE
As an expert on children and armed conflict, the Researcher will lead in developing and implementing research plans to ensure maximum impact, undertaking cutting-edge human rights investigations on children’s rights in situations of crisis. Producing timely research outputs; communicating findings, analysis, and wider strategy to internal and external stakeholders; and liaising with colleagues across the International Secretariat and wider Amnesty International movement.
The Researcher will contribute to strengthening Amnesty International’s reputation as a leading voice on children and armed conflict, including through strong research and advocacy on pressing issues, and collaborate closely with partner organizations.
Please note this position can be based in our London, New York or Washington DC offices. Other locations where Amnesty International Secretariat has a presence will also be considered
ABOUT YOU
As a human rights researcher with substantial experience undertaking investigations in situations of armed conflict or major crisis, including documenting and reporting on violations and abuses against children, you will have strong knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law and of the UN system related to children and armed conflict.
You will be able to draw from and add to the skills of a multi-disciplinary team, working with different research methodologies and with a commitment to innovation and creativity in outputs and campaigning, all to maximize impact in relation to specific issues affecting children’s rights. You will relish collaboration with colleagues across Amnesty International and among partner organizations working on children and armed conflict.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead on the development and implementation of research strategies designed to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities on children and armed conflict.
- Monitor, research, investigate, and analyze human rights-related developments in order to provide timely, accurate, independent, and impartial assessments and expert advice on the impact of conflict and other human rights crises on children, with an intersectional focus on gender and disability.
- Organize, take part in, and lead remote and on-the-ground investigations, undertaking information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis, and assessment of human rights concerns in situations of armed conflict or other major crises.
- Manage research and, as appropriate, to contribute to the selection of external consultants and supervise, support, coordinate, and provide expert advice on their work.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Significant experience undertaking human rights investigations in situations of crisis, including experience investigating violations against children in the context of armed conflict. Experience that includes a strong gender and/or disability focus in research is preferred.
- Proven experience of writing human rights research materials tailored for various audiences.
- Specialist knowledge of international human rights and humanitarian law, including related to children’s rights.
- Knowledge of the UN system related to children and armed conflict.
- Training and experience responding in a sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, including child survivors of human rights violations.
