Position Summary:

We are seeking an Intern to perform NextGen sequencing (NGS) sample preps and Sequencing to support our SOMAmer® reagent discovery pipeline. In this role, you will work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive research group. The internship will provide opportunities to learn laboratory techniques, molecular assays, as well as organizational and inventory management skills at an established and exciting local biotechnology company. Exceptional organizational and communication skills and an eagerness to learn are essential for this position. This position has the potential to extend beyond full time summer 2022 and transition to a longer-term full or part-time role in the group.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Learn protocols to routinely prepare and run samples on an Illumina Sequencer.
  • Process 100’s of nucleic acid samples for NextGen Sequencing within timelines.
  • Carefully monitor quality and maintain sample tracking records.
  • Utilize custom database, R and MS Excel to carefully process data and track samples
  • Design, order and track PCR primers and other reagents using existing systems.
  • Coordinate and prioritize work by communicating with manager and multiple research teams.

Skills & Requirements

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • 3rd or 4th year undergraduate, or recent graduate with applicable major in molecular/Cellular biology, biochemistry, chemical and biological engineering, Biomedical Engineering

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Conceptual understanding of molecular biology techniques (NGS knowledge a plus).
  • Some practical lab experience with molecular biology techniques including qPCR, PAGE, nucleic acid purification.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details with physical and electronic tasks
  • Experience with programing in python, R or similar for data processing or a sincere interest in learning some programming basics
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment

Work Environment:

Work is primarily in a typical laboratory environment with personal protective equipment use required and also in a typical office environment on-site at SomaLogic when outside of lab.
