POSITION SUMMARY:

The internship will be approximately 12 weeks long and will take place over the course of the upcoming summer at MPC’s Canton Ohio Refinery. The goal is to provide a hands-on learning experience where interns have the opportunity to observe and assist operators in a controlled refinery environment, while learning about the Operator position. The program’s training, work, and performance expectations are challenging because we want to accurately expose the student to the demanding aspect of the process operator profession. Operator interns will work a Monday through Friday 7:30am-4:00pm schedule for the first few weeks and then be assigned to a specific crew, working a rotating shift schedule for the duration of the internship. An Associate’s Degree and hands-on experience at the refinery should give the student a solid foundation from which to pursue a career as an Operator at MPC’s Canton Refinery.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interns will be placed into either the Operations Department or Product Movement Department (Tank Farm and Loading). Operator Interns will be expected to learn a basic understanding of refining process operations. Duties include, but are not limited to, monitoring the units, equipment isolation, collecting stream samples and writing work permits. Interns in Product Movement will be expected to understand basic refining process operations and tank farm product movements. Duties include, but are not limited to, monitoring the tank levels and transfers, tank gauging, equipment isolation, collecting tank samples, and writing work permits. All duties performed by the Operator Intern must be performed under the observation of a full-time Hourly Union Operator.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Candidates MUST be enrolled in one of the 2-Year Oil & Gas Technology Associates Degree Programs at Stark State College. Enrollment in the Industrial Process Operation Technology Associates Degree is preferred. Applicants must also have a 2.80 Cumulative GPA or higher and must have completed approximately 30 program credit hours by the start of the internship.

Qualified candidates must possess a HS Diploma or GED, be at least 18 years of age.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license, and have basic math, reading, writing, and verbal skills along with basic computer skills. Successful applicants will be required to pass a pre-employment written test, a physical abilities test, a background check and drug test.
