Xerox

Description & Requirements

PARC, a Xerox company, is in the Business of Breakthroughs®. Practicing open innovation, we provide custom R&D services, technology, expertise, best practices, and intellectual property to Fortune 500 and Global 1000 companies, startups, and government agencies and partners. We create new business options, accelerate time to market, augment internal capabilities, and reduce risk for our clients. Since its inception, PARC has pioneered many technology platforms – from the Ethernet and laser printing to the GUI and ubiquitous computing – and has enabled the creation of many industries. Incorporated as an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of Xerox in 2002, PARC today continues the research that enables breakthroughs for our clients’ businesses.

The Hardware Research and Technology Laboratory (HRTL) at PARC (A Xerox Company) is a group of multi-disciplinary scientists and engineers who enjoy the opportunity to invent and develop new technologies, foster innovation, and launch new businesses. Research conducted by HRTL spans a wide range of technologies, including: materials development and manufacturing, 3D printing, IoT (internet-of-things) sensors, technologies for carbon capture and emissions reduction, and much more.

The Materials Interfaces and Processes group within HRTL is looking for a Chemist or Materials Scientist to contribute to new research on materials and chemistry for fiber-reinforced composites, ceramic composites, and their manufacturing techniques, over the course of a 3-6 months internship starting in summer 2022. Responsibilities will be to design and synthesize polymer resins, fabricate composites using a variety of manufacturing processes such as casting, molding, rolling, curing, sintering, pyrolysis, etc., and characterizing the mechanical, physical, thermal, and corrosion properties of resins and composites. We are looking for an independent problem-solver who is eager to learn new skills, works safely in a variety of lab settings, and is excellent at communication and collaboration.

Responsibilities:

  • Synthesize, fabricate, and characterize new materials for fiber-reinforced polymers and carbon-based ceramic matrix composites, from component resins to finished test parts
  • Collaborate with the team to share findings and incorporate feedback
  • Read literature to propose new ideas for research and experiments
  • Document and communicate research findings in project meetings
  • Contribute to the creation of intellectual property

Qualifications:

  • Masters or Ph.D. candidates, or exceptional undergraduate juniors or seniors in Chemistry, Ceramics Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or related fields.
  • Available for on-site work for 3 to 6 (preferred) months, starting in summer 2022
  • Hands-on experience with synthetic chemistry or materials chemistry at a lab scale. Experience in one (or more) areas of particular relevance is ideal: synthesizing monomers and polymers, synthesizing ceramic particles or nanoparticles, chemistry of polymer resins, chemistry of high char-yield polymers.
  • Hands-on experience processing materials. Experience in one (or more) areas of particular relevance is ideal: resin or slurry formulation, pyrolysis, sintering, carbon fiber composite fabrication, or ceramic composite fabrication.
  • Familiarity with standard materials characterization tools, including FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometer, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), universal testing machine, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), or thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
