The Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) act of 2004 was put in place to help ensure that a company’s financial statements include complete and accurate data and that adequate controls are in place to safeguard this data. For companies that must be compliant with SOX controls over financial processes, the information systems that support them must be in place to maintain the integrity of financial statements.

This role will work directly with IT Governance, Risk, and Compliance Department. The SOX Compliance intern will have an opportunity to gain experience with processes related to IT SOX supporting financial systems and data. This includes processes such as change management, access to programs and data, and operations. In this role, you will work with management to document internal controls over financial reporting (ICOFR). This will help develop interpersonal skills and allow you to gain a better understanding of risks and controls.

This position reports to the Associate Director, IT Compliance (BC and SOX).

Sarbanes Oxley (SOX)

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work as part of a diverse team to learn/enhance knowledge of SOX compliance and gain an understanding of systems and data that support financial reporting.
  • Meet and network with key members of the organization in IT, Finance, and other departments
  • Execute tasks as assigned related to Sarbanes Oxley (SOX), including documentation of systems, controls (IT General Controls), and SOX processes in tools that support the SOX program.
  • Assist with coordination with internal and external stakeholders where appropriate to enable them to complete documentation and testing of controls.
  • Contribute with ideas in the development of metrics to properly evaluate SOX Program performance.
  • Report any risk or issue related to tasks performed.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn processes and technologies.

General – IT Compliance and Documentation

  • Support the team in the documentation of information related to the SOX program or other compliance areas.
  • Contribute to SOX plans and determine any major gaps of those plans with the IT Policies and Standards.

Business Relationship

  • Establish effective relationships with IT and Finance departments.
  • Liaise with the IT team to learn about the IT goals, roadmap, strategies, and processes.
  • Keep communication with the IT Risk & Compliance team.
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of IT Compliance (BC and SOX) to ensure that processes and areas of opportunity are continuously evaluated.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in Business, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Finance, or related field.
  • Actively demonstrates a willingness to pursue learning and growth opportunities including involvement in on-campus leadership activities
  • Familiarity with systems such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Web Browser technologies, and SharePoint.

Abilities/Skills

  • Effectively work with IT and Finance Organizations to learn those organizations’ processes.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to analyze situations.
  • Must be able to effectively work well as part of a team.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Relationship building/ collaboration skills across a number of audiences (internal and external).
  • Good written and oral communications and skills.
